Economist.com: The effect of the sanctions on Iraq: "An analysis of NGO health surveys conducted by Richard Garfield, a public-health expert at Columbia University, found that at least 100,000 (and probably as many as 227,000) children under five had died between 1991 and 1998 as a result of the Gulf war and sanctions. That works out at between 26 and 60 deaths every day among infants alone. A recent Unicef report estimated that, over the same period, some 500,000 under-fives had died."
