The government of British Columbia has suspended its balanced budget law. It "plans on investing up to $14 billion dollars on construction of infrastructure projects over the next three years, in order to counteract the negative impact of the global recession." (News) But they're simultaneously trying to 'tighten their belts', trying to 'cut wasteful government bureaucracy'. Target #1? Student and Co-op positions. A significant number of provincial government departments that normally hire students just aren't.
In short, money is being taken away from students that are training to be knowledge workers and it is being channelled to the construction sector. So this province's young people will gain lots of experience in construction. Knowledge economy be damned.
